ABSTRACT

Congenital heart disease (CHD) represents a significant population warranting particular attention concerning vaccination coverage. To comprehend the vaccination status of CHD within Yinzhou District, Ningbo City, China, and to facilitate the formulation of preventive, control, and immunization strategies against vaccine-preventable diseases in children with congenital heart conditions. Using the China Yinzhou Electronic Health Record Study (CHERRY) database, we analyzed the vaccination coverage of children with CHD born between January 1, 2016 and September 20, 2021, and analyzed the influencing factors associated with the level of vaccination coverage. This study involved 762 children diagnosed with CHD at the age of 12 months, revealing that 86.74% of these children had received at least one dose of the National Immunization Program (NIP) vaccines. The coverage for non-NIP vaccines, such as the rotavirus vaccine, influenza vaccine, Influenza Haemophilus influenzae Type b (Hib) Conjugate Vaccine, 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13), and inactivated enterovirus type 71 vaccine (EV71), stood at 27.30%, 7.74%, 63.25%, 33.76%, and 34.51%, respectively. The completion coverage for the entire vaccination schedule were 27.30%, 5.51%, 55.77%, 34.25%, and 25.59%, respectively. There was a statistically significant correlation between vaccination coverage in classification of diagnostic medical institutions and the types of diagnosed diseases. Compared to their typically developing counterparts, 12-month-old children afflicted with CHD exhibit a slightly diminished vaccination coverage, alongside a discernible inclination toward delayed vaccination. Notably, the determination to undergo vaccinations seems predominantly influenced by the classification of diagnostic medical institutions. In practical terms, proactive measures involving early diagnosis, comprehensive health assessments, and timely interventions ought to be implemented to enhance vaccination rates while prioritizing safety.

ABSTRACT

English walnut (Juglans regia L.) is an economically important hardwood tree species cultivated worldwide. Walnut heart rot disease leading to heartwood decay of trees has been frequently observed in a number of plantations in China. To identify the causal agent, 29 diseased stem samples were collected from walnut plantations in Beijing, and 54 fungal isolates were obtained. Koch's postulates were developed, and the results showed that Nothophoma juglandis, a species new to science, was the causal agent of walnut heart rot disease. Granulobasidium vellereum, a notable biocontrol agent, was coisolated with N. juglandis. An antagonistic assay on dual culture and walnut stems (both in the field and detached branches) proved that G. vellereum acted as a potential biocontrol agent against N. juglandis, as it could significantly inhibit the expansion of N. juglandis. The optimal temperature for mycelial growth and pathogenicity of N. juglandis was 26.6 and 27.0°C, respectively, which frequently occur in the summer of the walnut-growing regions in China.

ABSTRACT

Colletotrichum species are plant pathogens, saprobes and endophytes on various plant hosts. It is regarded as one of the 10 most important genera of plant pathogens in the world. Walnut anthracnose is one of the most severe diseases affecting walnut productivity and quality in China. In this study, 162 isolates were obtained from 30 fruits and 65 leaf samples of walnut collected in Beijing, China. Based on morphological characteristics and DNA sequence analyses of the concatenated loci, namely internal transcribed spacer (ITS), glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), actin (ACT), chitin synthase 1 (CHS-1) and beta-tubulin (TUB2), these isolates were identified as two novel species of Colletotrichum, i.e. C.juglandicola and C.peakense. Koch's postulates indicated that both C.juglandicola and C.peakense could cause anthracnose in walnut.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: HIV-1 subtype B, as once one of the earliest strains introduced into mainland China rapidly spread in commercial plasma donors and heterosexuals in 1990s. Here, we aim to investigate the origin and evolutionary history of HIV-1 subtype B in Fuyang city, China. Methods: We collected sequences tested from Fuyang in the east of China where higher prevalence of HIV-1 among commercial plasma donors and heterosexuals to construct a phylogenetic tree using the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm, infer molecular transmission network using TN93 model and visualize it with Cytoscape software. Results and discussion: Our results showed that >99% of subtype B sequences belonged to Thai B. The sequences from Fuyang often cluster closer to those from other its adjacent cities, which clustered together and formed a monophyletic cluster. HIV-1 B circulating in Fuyang dates back to approximately 1990. Among the 1,437 sequences, 166 clustered at a genetic distance of ≤1.2%, resulting in 73 clusters. The degree of clustering with at least one other person was 11.55%. Among the transmission clusters, 50 (80.65%) comprised two individuals. Most clusters consisted of both heterosexual transmission routes and men who have sex with men. Phylogenetic and molecular network analyses revealed a common origin with neighboring regions in mainland China, local onwards transmission after its introduction, and a limited clustering degree. However, at least two co-existing transmission routes in most transmission clusters imply a greater challenge in controlling the spread of HIV-1. Our findings highlight the value on tailoring prevention interventions by combination of molecular surveillance and epidemiology.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: As one of the essential hypertension (EH)-mediated target organ damage, carotid plaque is a crucial subclinical precursor for cardiovascular events. Therefore, it is vital to identify the risk factors and pathogenesis for EH with carotid plaque. METHODS: Based on our previous microarray analysis, we selected four circRNAs as the candidate circRNAs and detected their expression levels in blood of 192 subjects (64 healthy controls, 64 EH patients, and 64 EH patients with carotid plaque) by qRT-PCR analysis. The regulatory mechanism of circRNAs involved in carotid plaque was predicted by bioinformatics analysis. RESULTS: The level of hsa_circ_0124782 increased significantly and the levels of hsa_circ_0131618 and hsa_circ_0127342 decreased significantly in the EH group and EH with carotid plaque group compared with the control group (P < .05). Functional enrichment analysis showed that three circRNAs might be implicated in pathogenesis for carotid plaque. CONCLUSION: Our study revealed the relationship between three circRNAs and carotid plaque, suggesting that they may serve as potential biomarkers for EH with carotid plaque.

ABSTRACT

Blueberries (Vaccinium spp.) have been considered to be a superfood because of their health benefits. Stem blight or dieback of blueberry has been frequently observed in commercial plantations, with incidences between 15 and 30% being observed in China. The causal agents of blueberry stem blight and dieback were surveyed at four commercial blueberry plantations in the Shandong, Fujian, Guizhou, and Yunnan Provinces of China during 2017 and 2019. Twenty-eight isolates of Neofusicoccum were obtained from 75 diseased and dead stem samples. Two taxa were identified. Of these, one novel species, Neofusicoccum vaccinii, was identified based on morphological characteristics and DNA sequence analysis of the concatenated internal transcribed spacer, the translation elongation factor-1α gene, and the beta-tubulin gene. Koch's postulates tests indicated that N. vaccinii was pathogenic toward blueberry. N. parvum is the other species isolated in this study. The optimal temperature for mycelial growth was 30°C for both N. vaccinii and N. parvum. N. vaccinii, however, was more virulent than N. parvum in this study at temperatures ranging from 25 to 30°C. Coinoculation of N. vaccinii and N. parvum did not lead to increased disease severity. On the contrary, the aggressiveness of N. vaccinii was suppressed by the presence of N. parvum at 25 to 35°C.

ABSTRACT

Using pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for the prevention of HIV infection is a popular, contemporary research topic. We retrieved PubMed, Web of Science, MEDLINE, Wanfang, CNKI, and Sinomed databases, and related websites to identify studies both in Chinese and English, which reported the acceptability of PrEP in China. A total of 3203 citations were retrieved, of which 54 were included. We found that the acceptability varied widely across the country, ranging from 19.1% to 94.6%, and the pooled estimate was 66.8% (95% CI: 62.0%-71.3%). Higher acceptability of PrEP was associated with the following factors: individuals with a lower educational degree, higher income, non-discriminatory attitude towards AIDS or AIDS patients, self-perceived high HIV risk, feeling that PrEP should be promoted, familiarity with PrEP, history of HIV testing, history of anal intercourse, consistent condom use, higher number of sexual partners. The main reasons for not using PrEP are doubting its validity, fear of potential side effects and financial burden, and fear of stigma for using PrEP. This review found that the acceptance in China was moderate.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: A large number of unique recombinant forms have been found in China in recent years. This study aimed to report on a cluster of novel HIV-1 recombinants. METHODS: We constructed phylogenetic trees using the maximum likelihood (ML) method with 1,000 bootstrap replicates in IQ-TREE 1.6.8 software and determined recombination break points using SimPlot 3.5.1. RESULTS: Overall, 9 near-full-length genome (NFLG) sequences were reported in this study, including 1 circulation recombinant form (CRF)01_AE NFLG sequence and 8 highly similar novel HIV-1 second-generation recombinants composed of CRF01_AE and CRF07_BC (CRF105_0107) isolated from a cluster HIV-positive male subjects infected among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Nanjing, eastern China. The phylogenetic analysis of NFLG showed 1 sequence named "nj16" to have at least 11 breakpoints inner virus and 7 other sequences to have at least 10 breakpoints inner virus. Our findings further showed as follows: first, this is the first time that a cluster of novel CRF105_0107 HIV-1 strains were identified among MSM in Nanjing, Jiangsu. Second, the Chinese "4a" cluster of CRF01_AE which mainly circulating in northern China has spread in Jiangsu for more than 15 years. Third, HIV-1 recombination events were active in Nanjing city, and novel recombinants could spread rapidly through some small-scale transmission networks. CONCLUSION: The continued emergence of novel recombinant HIV-1 strains in Nanjing suggests dynamics and complexity in the HIV epidemic among MSM in Jiangsu province. Further investigations and molecular epidemiological research should be taken to monitor and understand transmission networks among MSM.

ABSTRACT

Investigation of disease and intervention in populations of men having sex with men (MSM) has garnered attention globally, a primary reason being the rapid increase in the prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 among MSM. The purpose of this study was to understand the current HIV-1 molecular characteristics and characterize HIV-1 transmission networks in the MSM population. Nine hundred and fourteen newly diagnosed HIV-positive MSM were included in this study. The HIV-1 pol gene region was amplified and sequenced. A maximum likelihood phylogenetic tree was constructed, and transmission clusters were identified using 1.5% distance and 0.9 bootstrap values. In total, 767 sequences were successfully obtained, with CRF01_AE being the major genotype (43.3%, 332/767), followed by CRF07_BC (31.3%, 240/767), CRF67_01B (7.2%, 55/767), and URF (6.4%, 49/767). The transmitted HIV drug resistance rate was 4.0% (31/767), and the most common mutations were E138G (n = 4) and G190A (n = 4). A total of 182 (23.7%) sequences were included in the HIV-1 transmission networks, forming 79 clusters. Four clusters were identified as fast-growing, and the proportion of young MSM was higher than that of non-MSM (51.6% vs. 31.8%). The genetic diversity of HIV-1 in Jiangsu was complex, and cross-region transmission might exist for CRF67_01B. Transmission among young MSM within networks was greater than the other age groups; thus, they could be essential in the control of the HIV epidemic in Jiangsu. This study was approved by the ethical review board of the National Center for AIDS/STD Control and Prevention (Project No. X140617334).

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To assess the prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and the correlated risk factors among male clients of female sex workers (FSWs) in a Chinese-Vietnamese border region in Yunnan Province, China. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted between 2014 and 2015 in Hekou County, Yunnan Province, China. Convenience sampling and snowball sampling methods were used to recruit male clients for a questionnaire survey to collect information on demographics, sexual behavior, and drug use. Blood and urine samples were collected for testing of HIV/sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and drug use. Multivariate logistic regression was used to examine factors correlated with HIV infection. RESULTS: Of 776 respondents who participated in the study, 721 (92.91%) were Chinese and 55 (7.09%) were Vietnamese. Overall HIV prevalence in male clients of FSWs was 2.06%, 128 (16.49%) were infected with HSV-2, and five (0.64%) tested syphilis-positive. Two-thirds (68.81%) of respondents reported always using condoms with FSWs, and 89.05% reported condom use in the last episode of commercial sex. Male clients from Vietnam were significantly more likely to take morphine (9.09%) compared with Chinese male clients of FSWs. Age ≥50 years (OR: 8.11, 95%CI: 1.26-52.16) and morphine positivity (OR: 7.35, 95%CI: 1.42-38.06) were associated with HIV infection in the multivariate logistic regression model. CONCLUSION: The relatively high proportion of male clients of FSWs who have numerous sexual partners and use condoms less frequently make them serve as important bridges for HIV transmission from FSWs to the low-risk general population. The positive association between morphine positivity and HIV infection confirmed illegal drug use as another important route for acquiring HIV infection in addition to sexual transmission, indicating that innovative interventions addressing both drug use and risky sexual behaviors are greatly required for male clients. Respondents aged ≥50 years have a higher risk of HIV infection, which emphasizes that older male clients of FSWs should be focused in future HIV prevention interventions in the border regions of China.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this meta-analysis was to provide a comprehensive overview of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 subtypes and to investigate temporal and geographical trends of the HIV-1 epidemic among men who have sex with men (MSM) in China. Chinese and English articles published between January 2007 and December 2017 were systematically searched. Pooled HIV-1 prevalence was calculated, and its stability was analysed using sensitivity analysis. Subgroups were based on study time period, sampling area and prevalence. Publication bias was measured using Funnel plot and Egger's test. A total of 68 independent studies that included HIV-1 molecular investigations were eligible for meta-analysis. Circulating recombinant form (CRF) 01_AE (57.36%, 95% confidence interval (CI) 53.76-60.92) was confirmed as the most prevalent HIV-1 subtype among MSM in China. Subgroup analysis for time period found that CRF01_AE steadily increased prior to 2012 but decreased during 2012-2016. Further whereas CRF07_BC increased over time, B/B' decreased over time. CRF55_01B has increased in recent years, with higher pooled estimated rate in Guangdong (12.22%, 95% CI 10.34-13.17) and Fujian (8.65%, 95% CI 4.98-13.17) provinces. The distribution of HIV-1 subtypes among MSM in China has changed across different regions and periods. HIV-1 strains in MSM are becoming more complex. Long-term molecular monitoring in this population remains necessary for HIV-1 epidemic control and prevention.
